Magnetic Effects Of Current

A magnet is not the only thing that produces magnetic effects. an electric current in a conductor also produces magnetic field. Whenever current is passed through a conductor it behaves as a magnet. Suppose a straight current carrying conductor is hung vertically, and an electric current is flowing from North to south i.e. from up to down. In this situation, the direction of the magnetic field will be clockwise and if the same current is flowing from south to north through the same conductor,  the direction of magnetic field will be anti- clockwise. In similar way we can observe the magnetic field produced by different current carrying conductors like loop, solenoid etc.

The phenomenon that when electric current passes through a wire, then the current carrying wire behaves like a magnet is known as a magnetic effect of current. It was discovered by a scientist Hans Christian Oersted who found that when electric current is passed in a wire, then the compass  needle placed near it got deflected from its usual North - South position.
